I was very impressed at Nicola’s technical abilities on Saturday (The Money Gym Wealth-A-Thon). She was using a digital camera, phoning people on Skype, editing a web page live, showing us screen shots of how to make an Excel cashflow spreadsheet – and then holding a picture-in-picture Skype call so we could see both Nicola and the person she was interviewing. Wow! There were a couple of technical glitches along the way but hey, they happen on big budget productions too!
I’m definitely going to start using more technology – the results are so impressive. If the entrants to the competition could make such a good job of it, so can I.
For most of the show Nicola was doing everything herself and it has to be said that by mid afternoon she was starting to flag a bit, which wasn’t surprising. When her sister Sarah arrived, the energy of the show was restored.
Since working for myself, I have tended to be a bit of a ‘lone ranger’ most of the time. In the early days I thought I had to be. But working with other people brings so many advantages. In Nicola’s case, when she interacted with others either by phone or in person, she seemed to visibly ‘step up a gear’. I find that, while I’m perfectly happy working on my own, it’s great to have someone to spark ideas from on occasions too.
To end my musings about this show, I have one final and very important lesson to share. The show was fun! Nicola looked & sounded as if she was having a ball. When technical things went a bit haywire she didn’t get upset, she just laughed and got on with it.
Business is serious – but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fun as well. And if it isn’t fun, we must be doing something wrong!
