Have you ever taken the wrong road when driving somewhere unfamiliar? You got a feeling it was wrong just a millisecond after you turned the steering wheel, but still kept on driving for a while hoping it would turn out to be the right road after all. Until reluctantly you admitted to being lost, turned the car around and retraced your route back to where you took the wrong turn - hoping you’d soon be travelling in the right direction again.
I know I’ve done this in the past and, although I’m sure you probably use SatNav to stop this happening, there are still plenty of amusing stories about drivers ending up in unexpected places, to show us that even technology isn’t guaranteed to avoid taking the odd wrong turn.
What about trying to find the right partner to share the rest of your life with? Some people strike lucky very quickly, whereas others seem destined to search for ages - living through the emotional highs and lows of numerous unsatisfactory relationships. To their family and close friends it’s obvious that they keep dating the wrong people, but the person involved can’t see it - goodness knows I could certainly go on about this for several hours based on my personal experiences! But I digress ;))
In business too, I see many business owners who doggedly keep on the same well-worn track of networking breakfasts - one to one coffee meetings - networking breakfasts - one to one ...... month after month, year after year, seeing only the same familiar faces, and wondering why they keep attracting the same disappointing results to their order book.
It isn’t that what they’re doing is completely wrong, but if their marketing activities aren’t bringing the business they want, then it makes sense to try something new; to shake things up a bit. There are so many low-cost possibilities, especially with social media marketing, that there’s no excuse not to. And there’s definitely no reason why they can’t steer their business onto the right road and make lots of exciting new contacts.
Now, about those relationships ......
