Up until now, I've admired the way Sarah Ferguson worked her way out of massive debt and made good use of her title, and personally, I don't blame her for wanting to make money from her connections (after all, enough other people do it every day). Unfortunately for her, on this occasion she was caught by an under-cover newspaper reporter and, listening to those lame excuses has diminished her somehow in my eyes. More so because she chose such a public place to make them.
I learned at a very early age that it was far better to own up and apologise when I'd done something wrong or made a mistake - preferably before it was found out by anyone else! Making excuses and embellishing them at every telling simply prolonged the agony and fooled no-one (especially not my mum!)
Since starting up in business, I've known that, as I'm the only one here, the buck very obviously stops with me! Yet sometimes I still try to make excuses or justify to myself why I haven't done something - until my inner critic pipes up to remind me what I'm doing.
It really is so much easier, not to mention less stressful, to simply accept being at fault. Then we can put the experience firmly behind us, learn from it - and move on.
What is it about making excuses or shifting the blame when we make mistakes or don't achieve our goals? Do you understand, because I still don't.
